From Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (PR1). Arguably the most spectacular hike on Madeira leads through the Massif Central. We did this hike in July 2023. This tour offers one breathtaking view after another, crossing peaks, narrow ridges, along steep cliffs, and through numerous tunnels (don't forget your flashlight!).
This tour is approximately 12 km long, with approximately 1,100 meters of elevation gain on both ascent and descent. The countless steps require a good amount of fitness and stamina.
Please note! A large part of the hike is currently closed, with only about a good kilometer open from Pico do Arieiro (video up to about 6:45 min). The spectacular Ninho do Manta viewpoint and the breathtaking staircase on the ridge (Stairway to Heaven) are accessible and accessible.
