Hōjō Masako was a subtle, clever woman who maximised the opportunities given to her. While other women in Europe during the 12th century were also playing with ideas of power or trying to take crowns behind thrones, Masako was doing the same thing in Japan. Wife to Japan's first shogun, and mother to the second and third shoguns respectively, Masako earned a place of respect and admiration for her calm steady leadership, and she essentially held Japan's administration safely while civil wars raged on with the male members of her family. This video looks at what we know of her life and how it affected 12th century Japan...
