The existence of a tumor microbiota has been discovered only recently. These findings can have a lot of implications, but many questions remain unanswered.
Does the tumor microbiota protect the body from cancer or vice-versa? Are these bacteria selective, preferring one tumor tissue over another? Can the tumor microbiota be used for diagnostic applications?
We discussed this interesting topic with Sandrine Miller-Montgomery, Executive Director of the Center for Microbiome - UC San Diego, during MIBIOC, the first international congress on the relationship between microbiota and cancer.
