STORYLINE:

Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has accused the country's government of sponsoring violence after an attack on an opposition M-P's house near Harare.

Tsvangirai was visiting the home of Movement for Democratic Change (M-D-C) M-P Tafadzwa Musekiwa, which was stoned by ruling party hardliners earlier this week.

Musekiwa said he was awoken by a hail of stones and saw a mob of about 100 people running away when the alarm was raised.

No one was hurt but several windows were smashed.

Remaining defiant in the face of treason charges against him, Tsvangirai said the attack was another example of state-sanctioned violence.

Meanwhile, M-D-C supporters have been out in force around Harare ahead of next month's presidential elections, putting up posters and spraying slogans on walls under cover of darkness.

In stark contrast to the embattled opposition leader, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's election campaign appears to be in full swing.

On Wednesday he rallied supporters north of Harare in Mashonaland province - a traditional stronghold of his ruling Zanu-PF party.

Mugabe again took the opportunity to criticise sanctions imposed by the European Union, who along with the U-S has condemned his conduct in the run-up to the elections scheduled for March 9-10.
