CHARACTER BACKGROUND.
Devonte "C-low" Smith
Age: 20
Traits: Impulsive, Street Smart, Loyal, Aggressive, Ambitious.
Devonte grew up in the rough neighborhoods of Long Beach, a territory controlled by the Insane Crips. His mother, a hardworking single parent, did her best to keep him away from the streets, but the pressures of the environment made that nearly impossible. His father, who was once an active member of the Crips, was incarcerated when Devonte was only 3 years old, leaving his mom to navigate life without him.
From an early age, Devonte was exposed to the gang culture that dominated his neighborhood. He had older cousins and uncles who were heavily involved, and his best friend, Tyrese, was like a brother to him—also connected to the gang. Although his mom warned him about the dangers of that lifestyle, Devonte found it hard to resist the sense of brotherhood and loyalty that the gang provided, especially when he felt like he had no real male role model in his life.
As a child, Devonte spent his early years playing basketball, often using the court as a place to escape the violence and tension of the street corners. He showed promise on the court, and there was talk of him earning a scholarship to play in college. However, when Devonte turned 16, Tyrese was gunned down in a drive-by shooting, a victim of the ongoing war between rival gangs in the area. The death deeply affected Devonte, and it made him feel like he had no other way to protect his friends and family than to dive deeper into the gang world.
At 17, Devonte was initiated into the Insane Crips subset YFC & renamed to C-low, from a former nickname D-low, picking up the C as a symbol of his relation with the Crips. His rise within the gang was fast, as he quickly became known for his ability to handle tense situations and his street smarts. Now at the age of 20, C-low is a crucial part of the Baby Insane Crips subset bringing in money and setting a reputation for the gang.
