SNCF TGV Duplex Ride: Lille Europe to TGV Haute Picardie - 06/09/17

Video: The second journey I made that day heading to TGV Haute Picardie from Lille Europe onboard a SNCF TGV Duplex unit. Originally, I was aiming to book a ticket to get on the low cost Ouigo TGV to Haute Picardie, but I soon found out that Ouigo services starts at Tourcoing which is to the far north east of Lille and my time was limited. Instead I managed to get the standard TGV for just under £10 from Lille, which of course was better but I did want at least one journey on the Dasye Duplex. Overall this was a great experience.

This was service 5164 from Lille Europe to Marseille Saint-Charles with TGV Duplex unit 223, I sat on seat 95 in coach 1 at the top deck (close to the rear power car). I was lucky to get this seat in coach 1 upstairs as the SNCF booking system seemingly assigns you a seat at random, I would have preferably wanted seat 105 (I think) which is against the power car and has a good window view of the adjacent track and scenery, but I can't complain as seat 95 gave me a great view too. There were moments of racing with road traffic once the train hit 300kmh (186mph), as this section of LGV Nord runs parallel to the A1 Autoroute with connect the North & Lille with Paris. Like the Eurostar TMST the ride was incredibly smooth, the seats were very comfortable, you almost don't feel like you are travelling at nearly 200mph. Also, as I sat in coach 1 you can partially hear the traction motors which sound similar to the Eurostar TMST, but because the Duplex has synchronous motors the start up is completely different.
