📍Eastern Navajo Fair Pow Wow | Friday Night | Crownpoint, NM
Yá’át’ééh! Aaron Tsosie here — the guy behind the camera and the creator of Indigenous Event Recordings (IER). Welcome to the Friday night pow wow at the Eastern Navajo Fair in Crownpoint, New Mexico!
I arrived about 45 minutes after Grand Entry started (oops — same thing happened the next day 😅). Jumping in mid-event felt awkward at first — no warm-up, just straight into filming with some curious side-eyes from the crowd. But when MC Trevor Foster gave IER a shoutout on the mic, it reminded me that I’m not just some guy with a camera — I’m here with a purpose 💪
🎥 Event Vibes
The pow wow tent was dusty! I packed masks (lesson learned from last year) but didn’t wear one 😬 Grand Entry began at 7:30pm and wrapped around 9:45pm — a short session overall.
🎪 Event Layout & Tips
Parking: $5 per day, per vehicle (cash only, no re-entry). I paid $10 total since I left to catch the parade Saturday. camping was also included when you entered the fair grounds.
Bathrooms: Only portapotties. No gas stations or restaurants nearby, so plan ahead!
Water access: A hose between the pow wow tent and campgrounds. Some campers turned it into a shower with hose attachments — not much privacy, though! another site a little more south of the pow wow tent.
Vendors: few food & merch options. I didn’t explore much — focused on capturing footage and doing gear runs.
Other activities: Song & dance, rodeo ($10) , and live bands ($15). The band played till midnight, so next year… earplugs 😅
💡 Pro Tips for 2026
Bring a dust mask
Bring earplugs if camping
If RVing, bring a long hose for water access
Women might prefer to plan ahead with bathroom alternatives due to lack of clean portapotties, epecially if camping.
Friday’s pow wow may have been short, but it had that special community energy that makes these events so meaningful. Thanks to everyone who made me feel welcome — especially my Phoenix fam from afar ❤️
