In this video I discuss the problem of Ai listings on Etsy, specifically for hand-embroidery patterns. This upsetting and growing trend on a "handmade" marketplace is pushing out real makers and replacing their quality listings with an overabundance of deceptively realistic imagery made in a second with the click of a button. The listings usually sell poorly made, partially stolen, directionless outlines that seem like a good deal at outrageously dirt-cheap prices. The sad reality is that many shoppers don't realize that they are being taken advantage of and purchasing un-makeable Ai lies. Ai is probably not going anywhere, but if you want to support true "handmade," this video should give you some solid ideas of what to look out for PLUS a real tool (17:24) to put your mind at ease.
In such a tricky technological time, I hope this video helps you feel confident sifting through Ai slop to find genuine, heartfelt listings made by the creativity and care of real humans.
Where do you draw the line with Ai?
I have tried my best to remove the shop names from my video out of sensitivity and goodwill to the people behind the robots behind the shops ;) To those sellers: You are missing out on the true joy that only comes with fair play, creative practice, and respect for you, for other makers, and for the craft.
