When I first took the assignment to train new recruits at a remote Antarctic research outpost, I thought it would be all isolation, cold wind, and boring scientific protocol.

I was wrong.

On my first night, the veteran staff handed me a laminated sheet: 16 rules.
Not normal instructions — warnings.

Rule #4: If you hear footsteps outside after midnight, do NOT open the door — even if the voice sounds familiar.

I laughed.

Then I heard it.

A knock.
A voice calling my name.
A voice that belonged to someone who wasn’t scheduled to arrive for three more days.

Now the recruits are arriving… and that voice keeps getting closer.

And tonight…
Rule #16 starts applying.

Rule #16:
If the lights flicker three times, whatever is inside the station is no longer pretending.
