I managed to find one of the 'tattooed rocks' in Raglan. I believe that there were many at one stage, but this is the only one I could find. I saw images dating back to the early 1900s of these rocks, and was always fascinated. I was thrilled to find this! As awesome as this was, I did feel saddened at why this is neglected? Why is this not in a museum and protected? I have no answer. If anyone could please share why, that would be great. This rock(s) is left to erode, with it's historical carvings soon to be lost forever.
I am unsure of the origin. I presume this is Māori carvings, however some speculate that the carvings are not of Māori origin. I did hear some speculate this may have had Nordic origin. I really do not know. I would like to say that I have the upmost respect for the whenua (land), and did not touch the rock. The carvings are just about visible. I predict that in less than 5 years, weather will have taking its tole.
Does anyone have some more information on this? Cheers.
A big warning to anyone who may try to find these, please check tide times. This is no joke.
