Implementation of VIVA VOCE/Oral Defense Policy for PhD Candidates
We are pleased to inform you that the Durban University of Technology has officially adopted a VIVA VOCE (Oral Defense) policy for PhD candidates, effective from November 13, 2025.
This policy outlines the structured procedures, guidelines, and protocols that will govern the oral defense process, ensuring clarity and consistency for all doctoral candidates.
The Oral Defense (Viva Voce) is an in-depth academic evaluation involving the critical examination and discussion of a candidate’s research work. It serves as a formal assessment of the candidate's understanding, originality, and contribution to the academic field.
