Toyota GR Supra: Is the Manual a Game-Changer? (MkV)

Let’s test drive and review the 2024 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 — this time, with a 6-speed manual transmission! This car is the 45th Anniversary Edition, meaning it’s one of only 900 built and comes in a special orange paint color called “Mikan Blast.” (No, it’s not red!) It costs $65,000.

When the fifth-generation Toyota Supra debuted, there were two main complaints: It’s sourced from the BMW Z4, and it doesn’t come with a manual transmission. The new Supra had a lot to live up to; the MK4 Supra and its 2JZ engine became so famous due to the Fast and Furious franchise, and because the Supra nameplate wasn’t for sale for about two decades, there was a lot of time for the anticipation to build.

The new Toyota Supra comes with two engine options — a 2.0 liter and a 3.0 liter — and this car has the 3.0-liter, twin-scroll turbo inline-6. The car makes 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, and its acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is less than 4 seconds.

In America, there aren’t a lot of new manual-transmission cars these days. Manual vs. auto take rates favor autos by a staggering margin, because the evolution of technology now means most people don’t want to shift their own gears. For a few years, it looked like the Supra would be just another auto.

But Toyota (and BMW) came through, finally blessing us with a stick.

When the new Supra arrived a few years ago (as an automatic-only model), reviews were mixed. A lot of people, myself included, said it lacked some personality. It was fun, practical, and did all the right things, but it did them with such ease that there was something … missing. When the manual arrived, the question became: Can it provide what the automatic Supra lacked?
