LAZAR BERMAN plays "Vallée d'Obermann" from the "Années de pèlerinage - Première année: Suisse" S. 160 by FRANZ LISZT.
“What do I want? Who am I? What do I ask of nature?" were the questions Liszt asked himself with this piece centering around the constant struggle between identity-crisis and a state of confusion about what's real and what isn't. Obermann's valley is as about a valley through Liszt's darkest, depressed, most confused thoughts, cementing this piece as the emotional core and climax of the "Années de pèlerinage - Première année: Suisse".
The captions include one from Byron's succeeding canto 97, ("Could I embody and unbosom now / That which is most within me,--could I wreak / My thoughts upon expression, and thus throw / Soul--heart--mind--passions--feelings--strong or weak-- / All that I would have sought, and all I seek, / Bear, know, feel--and yet breathe--into one word, / And that one word were Lightning, I would speak; / But as it is, I live and die unheard, / With a most voiceless thought, sheathing it as a sword").
