70 years ago, on 11 June 1955 over 80 people were killed in Le Mans in the worst motor racing accident of the era.
The sporting tragedy is the most catastrophic accident in motor racing history. Pierre Levegh's Mercedes crashed and blew up at 125 mph killing Levegh and sending debris flying in to the crowd at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Over 80 people were killed and over 120 were injured....but the race wasn't stopped!!
This film is from the John Tate Collection held at the National Motor Museum Film & Video archive. It's almost unbelievable that the accident gets only a momentary comment in this film with most of the footage showing before and after the crash.
