Super Mario Galaxy Orchestral Medley
Music by Mahito Yokota & Koji Kondo
Arr. Linus Lu DC'19
Super Mario Galaxy was released by Nintendo in 2007 to widespread success. It brought the iconic franchise new and universal heights with its gravity-bending, starbit-collecting, planet-jumping gameplay. Super Mario Galaxy also entered new grounds in terms of its in-game soundtrack: it was the first time that a Super Mario game used orchestra. By eschewing the more tropical, arcade quality of early Super Mario music, Mahito Yokota and Koji Kondo’s orchestral soundtrack created a more spacey, epic feel to the game.
This arrangement contains four songs. The first, “Gusty Garden Galaxy,” captures both heroism and levity, with a flowing melody that accompanies Mario as he (literally) glides through this windy, sunlit level. This section is followed by “Rosalina’s Observatory,” a delicate waltz that sets the tone of Mario’s home base as he cruises through the cosmos. The third song is “Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor” from the sequel game, Super Mario Galaxy 2, an ominous march that portends Mario’s final battle against Bowser. The arrangement concludes with the Super Mario Galaxy theme song.
