In this video, I show you how to doodle a custom cover for your sketchbook!
The materials you’re going to need to do this are:
Sketchbook
White-colored pencil
A variety of colored paint pens
Scratch piece of paper
Hair Dryer (optional)
Step 1: Sketch First! Lightly sketch out your design with a white colored pencil before you use your paint markers.
Step 2: Map your route! Before using your paint pen; decide what corner you will start coloring. It’s important to think through the order and flow of how you will color from your starting point to where you will end, so you don’t smear your colors with your drawing hand as you paint.
Step 3: Shake it up! Shake the pen well before using it. And make sure the top is on!
Step 4: Scratch test! Use your scratch paper to activate the color. Lightly press the tip down on the paper as the paint absorbs into the nib of the marker.
Step 5: The layering method! You’re ready to start coloring. Color in small sections and use the layering method. Color one layer at a time, making sure each layer is dry before starting the next layer. This will ensure your colors are vibrant.
Step 6: Watching paint dry! Drying for the layering method. You can wait for the colors to air dry or you can speed up the process with a hair dryer. Make sure you are not too close to the journal when blow-drying. Find the right distance from the journal, so you don’t burn the material or spread the paint with the airflow coming from the dryer. SAFETY WARNING – be sure your hair dryer is plugged into an appropriate outlet and do not use an extension cord.
Step 7: Ink it! Once you have colored your sketch, outline your colors with a black inking pen to make your art “pop”.
Now you have a custom doodle sketchbook that’s ready to be filled up!
