The first version of Peggy O (Roud 545) I ever heard was from Hoyt Axton, but the Bob Dylan version is likely the most popular in the US today. The tune is a great example of folk song transmission. The American versions of the tune set the events during the American Civil War and mention Louisiana, but they also mention the mythical Irish place name "Fennario." This lyrical survival points to its origins in Scotland or Ireland.
The tune also goes by the names Handsome Polly-O / The Bonnie Lass of Fyvie / Peg of Derby / Pretty Peggy-O. Many of the existing versions use Scottish formulas but contain references to Irish and Scottish characters and place names.
