Lila is a first time mom. She had an unexpected litter last monday. The kits almost froze to death. We brought her inside and she began using her nesting box like a litter box, urinating all over the young babies. We traded it out for a smaller nesting box and gave her a shallow litter pan, which worked until she began spilling the babies out of the nesting box by flipping it over. We gathered all of the babies back up and placed them back into the nesting box. Then she tried to kill them by stomping on them.
Young Does that are 1st time moms don't always have those amazing mom instincts we hope for. Sometimes it takes a few litters for them to figure out how to be good rabbit mommies. Until then, we are caring for Lila's babies in hopes of reuniting them with Lila at some point.
