In part 3 of our series on interfaith marriage, Dr. Shabir Ally addresses these common questions from viewers. Dr. Shabir explains that there were no sects at the time that the Quran was revealed. Later, when sects developed, scholars tried to develop rulings regarding relationships. Though there may be no legal ruling against marrying outside one’s sect, Dr. Shabir counsels that it may be wisest on a practical basis to marry someone closest in perspective and worldview to oneself. But he also says marriage is just one aspect of life, and we shouldn’t give it more importance than it deserves.
