"The Gold Rush - 49er vs. The Chinese" - The Discovery of America

During the 1849 Gold Rush, thousands of Chinese men were drawn to California by the promise of "Gum Saan" (Gold Mountain), fleeing drought and civil war in China. They faced severe discrimination, including high taxes, violence, and the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first federal law to prevent an ethnic group from immigrating to the U.S. Despite hardships, they formed a significant part of the mining workforce and provided essential services, but their success fueled resentment and intensified anti-Chinese sentiment.

The Gold Rush sparked an unprecedented mass migration in the U.S. At the time of the discovery, and within a year about 80,000 “forty-niners” (as the fortune seekers of 1849 were called) had reached the California goldfields. By 1853 their numbers had grown to 250,000.

The Discovery of America... and the opening of the great American West in the early 19th century is explored. The westward march of Americans toward the Pacific sets the stage for the Gold Rush.
