HOWARD HOOD – SHOF 2023 1970’s ERA 2 INDUCTEE
Starting to skate in 1970, he was inspired by the pros he would see in the magazines. He came into his own at the Runway Skatepark and when Kanoa Surf called about an upcoming contest, Howard became pro. From there he was featured in multiple ads and skated in contests. Never one for the limelight, Howard, never having a desire to shop himself or focus on the fame and business end of skateboarding, instead focusing on the act itself. During skateboarding’s decline, Howard became increasingly fascinated with surfing and punk rock, but skating always followed. Hailing from Santa Monica California, Lonny Hiramoto started skating in 1976 at age 11, and was heavily influenced by Shogo Kubo and Howard Hood. After only two years, Hiramoto turned pro at age 13 with Kanoa Surf. Lonny later became known for winning the very first televised skateboard contest, which was held at Runway Skate Park in 1979. But Lonny’s fame didn’t stop there, as he became the inventor of the footplant. Having struggled with drugs since he was young, Lonny changed his life and turned to religion for guidance. Hiramoto still skates to this day, having been ripping for more than 40 years. – Chuck Harp / Concrete Disciples
