Ravangla, also known as Rabong, is a tranquil hill town in South Sikkim, India, situated at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. It is strategically located between Pelling, Gangtok, and Namchi. The name "Ravangla" is derived from the Sikkimese language: 'Ra' meaning wild sheep, 'vong' translating to a rearing place, and 'la' meaning a pass.

Ravangla's history is deeply intertwined with Tibetan Buddhism. The town is home to several significant monasteries, including the centuries-old Rabong Gompa and the nearby Ralang Monastery, which is one of the most important monasteries in Tibetan Buddhism. Established in 1768, Ralang Monastery underwent reconstruction in the late 20th century and hosts annual festivals such as Pang Lhabsol, celebrating Mount Kangchenjunga.

A notable historical event in Ravangla's recent history is the consecration of the Buddha Park's 130-foot statue by the 14th Dalai Lama on March 25, 2013. This event marked the 2,550th birth anniversary of Gautama Buddha and underscored Ravangla's significance in the Himalayan Buddhist Circuit.
