Gretchen is a graduate of Art Center College of Design, where she earned a degree in fashion illustration. Before becoming a jewelry artist, Gretchen was well known for her wonderfully detailed illustrations in the popular children's books created with her friend, novelist Amy Tan. Their first collaboration, The Moon Lady, was followed by The Chinese Siamese Cat, which was adapted into the Emmy Award-winning, animated, children's TV series Sagwa, The Chinese Siamese Cat.
