In this video, I explore the painting techniques employed by Jacques Louis David in his depiction of the death portrait of Marat. Amidst the fervor of the French Revolution, Jacques Louis David gained prominence as a painter adhering to the principles of Classicism, greatly influenced by Nicolas Poussin. During the Reign of Terror, Jean-Paul Marat, a notable politician and journalist, met his demise at the hands of a political adversary. David was tasked with creating a portrait of this de facto martyr of the French Revolution, a responsibility that would eventually bring him into conflict with his nation.
