In 1979, Marichjhapi (in the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, West Bengal) became the scene of one of the most harrowing, yet largely forgotten, tragedies in post-Partition Indian history.

After decades of persecution in then-East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), thousands of lower-caste Hindu refugees — mostly Dalits — sought refuge in India under the hope of a new beginning. Many had initially been placed under the Dandakaranya Project, but when a change in policy came, some brave souls tried to resettle by creating a self-sustained community on Marichjhapi.

They dared to build homes, fish, farm, start schools — hoping for dignity and survival. But their hopes were crushed. In January 1979, the state government imposed a blockade: no food, no clean water, no medicines could reach the island.

When the desperate islanders attempted to fetch supplies or flee, they were met with violence. On 31 January 1979, police reportedly opened fire; many faced starvation, disease, drowning, or dropped into rivers. Survivors recount mass arrests, beatings, burning of huts, enforced confinement — all under the guise of forest-law enforcement.

Official records cite a handful of deaths (2–8), but eyewitnesses, historians and community members believe the real toll was far greater — perhaps thousands. The survivors’ stories have largely been buried: no wide investigation, no justice, and only a silent memorial on a neighboring island.
