The Ups & Downs of Being a Sega Fan

This was originally a 2 parter where I went over 10 times Sega made me happy and 10 times they let me down. Many of these are still relevant now so I put them together for new subscribers and those of you that enjoy longer episodes.

2. I often talk about my disappointment in what the Sega CD could have been. Don't let that make you believe I did not love the platform. I owned and supported it the entire way.

3. Being a Sega fan often was a situation of duality. On the one hand, the Saturn and Dreamcast missed many great Model 2 and 3 games. But Sega made those Model 2 and 3 games in the first place.

4. Sonic Mania is the best Sonic by a mile. It's not even close.

5. If you have not played the 2 Otogi games on the Xbox, please do.

6. Panzer Dragoon Orta is one hell of a game. Visually, it's the best in the series. As much as I love it, however, I did not enjoy the soundtrack.

7. Outrun 2 is Sega's best arcade racer. The sheer fun factor is unrivaled.

8. I am often asked, which is better? The Saturn or Genesis 6 button Arcade Pad? It is like comparing Kate Upton and Adriana Lima. They have different curves but both are in a league of their own.

9. The Xmas of 95 was a great stretch to be a Sega fan. Not only did we get the games I spoke of here, but game magazines were talking about X-Men Children of the Atom and Street Fighter Alpha right around the corner.

10. I use a special SCART cable for my DC that captures the 480P VGA output so I can use it for my videos. It still looks impressive to me all these years later.

11. You may be surprised to see that the way the Saturn was handled in the US not being on this list. I mainly followed the Saturn in Japan, where I received 5 years of quality releases. I was pretty happy with the Saturn's life overall.

12. The Sega CD's sprite scaling and rotation came at an enormous cost to performance in many games. This is likely why Sega rarely used it. But this still doesn't explain why it was put in the machine in the first place. If Sega knew it would be hard to implement, why not just make a cheap CDROM addon like NEC and focus on things like cinematics, soundtracks, and FMV at a MUCH cheaper price?

13. Be wary of Saturn VF3 footage that circles the net. It's not genuine. There is no footage of the actual game running to my knowledge.

14. I figure I'm gonna get a lot of responses in regards to Panzer Dragoon Saga. Keep in mind I was not a huge RPG kid and much-preferred action games.

15. A lot of folks bring up the uneven terrain in VF3 as a reason the Saturn couldn't have done it. This is simply not true. VDP2 could do slanted surfaces(like VF3's rooftop stage), and VDP1 could overlay sprites onto VDP2 to simulate height changes(such as Contra Legacy of War). It would have looked different to be sure, but VF2 turned out just fine and it looked quite different as well.
