When UNCLE SAM broke up in 1994 or so, Dave Gentner retired from music. At the same time, ZEZOZOSE also broke up and Jet bought a Gibson SG and said to me "let's start a new band"(Jet played bass in ZEZOZOSE).
Originally we asked Rick Cona(ex-original Chesterfield King) to play bass and we said to him that we wanted the Uncle Sam singer. Rick said "which one? i know them both"(Scott Cessna was the original Uncle Sam singer before Dave replaced him. Dave was originally the Uncle Sam bassist). We liked their album 'Letters From London'(with Dave singing), so we said "Dave". I always wondered what would have happened if we called Scott instead ...
Before we rehearsed with Rick on bass, he changed his mind about it so I became the bass player and we got Tom Sherman on drums. Dave showed up to our first rehearsal not with a PA system but with a guitar. So we rehearsed instrumentally like that for MONTHS. It was to the point where we didn't even know if he was gonna sing. Tom had a huge double bass Metallica-type drumset and we got him to trim it down to a Ringo kit. That didn't last. As soon as he put the monster kit back together, we decided I will play dums and we'll look for a bass player. So we called Rick again. He said yes and by this time Dave was singing and playing guitar. So it was coming together.
We learned 'Rip Off' by T Rex and 'Two Headed Dog' by Roky Erickson and composed most of what would be on our first album, 'The Glorious Sounds Of The Veins' a few years later. My good friend Tod Wirschem gave the band its debut show opening for his band, BIG HAIR and CAN'T SAY(from Albany) at Milestones on East Avenue on July 1, 1995.
