Bitangad Fort lies to the east of the Kalsubai mountain range. Other forts found along this eastern ridge include Aundha, Patta, Aad, and the hill of Mhasoba. From the summit of Bitangad Fort, one can see the forts of Alang, Madan, Kulang, and the peak of Kalsubai itself in the eastern direction. When viewed from the village of Bitka, the hill of Bitangad appears pyramid-shaped. Since this fort stands apart from the main mountain range, it provides a vast and clear view of the surrounding region. Judging by the narrow summit and the remaining ruins, it is believed that the fort was primarily used as a watchtower. From the temple in the village of Bitka (also called Bitangwadi), a tar road leads up to the base of the fort. Where the tar road ends, a rough dirt track continues, eventually turning into a well-trodden footpath. This path enters dense forest. In this area, a few stones smeared with vermilion can be seen locals refer to these as “Mauli.” The trail then ascends a steep slope and reaches a rock patch where steps are carved directly into the stone. Near the beginning of these steps, on the right-hand side of the trail, there is a water cistern.
The rock-cut steps are quite narrow, with small handholds carved into the rock to provide support while climbing up or down. For safety, it is advisable to carry a rope, especially since the steps can become slippery due to moss during the monsoon season. After the steps end, a short climb brings you to a spacious cave supported by one or two stone pillars. Moving ahead from the cave, there is a broken water tank, followed by dense karvi shrubs. Passing through these thick bushes, the trail leads to the topmost point of the fort. The summit of Bitangad is small. It is believed that the fort served as a watch post, given its strategic view over a vast surrounding area. Descending from the opposite side of where you climbed up, you will find two dry water tanks. Continuing along the left side of the fort, another water tank can be seen. Walking further ahead, there are three more tanks and a cave that still holds water. Proceeding onward, one more tank can be found before the trail loops back to the rock-cut steps. This completes the circuit of the fort from here, you can begin your descent.
