Starting from Chapter 7, we pushed through Zoe's emotional backstory, defeated Raider's reality-warping chaos, and reached the heartfelt ending. Then we discovered "Laser Hell," the game's brutally difficult bonus level, and spent an hour learning why it's called that.

The emotional peak came during Chapter 8 when Zoe confronted her sister Ella's death. "It was never your fault, Zoe," hit different when you've been watching these characters grow for hours. The game's final boss threw every genre at us—pinball mechanics, rhythm sections, bullet hell segments—all while Raider screamed "This is my show!" as his machine collapsed. After the credits rolled and we unlocked the "BFFs trophy," we thought we were done. We were wrong.

Laser Hell is a precision platforming nightmare hidden behind a binary code puzzle (1-0-0-1-0-1-1-0-1, if you're curious). The challenge requires frame-perfect jumps, dashes, and timing across laser grids that make Cuphead look forgiving. "I would rather get good at fucking Hollow Knight and do P5 again at this point," John said around the two-hour mark, and he meant it. We didn't beat it, but we got close enough to see why Hazelight invited the first players who completed it to their HQ.

Split Fiction is Hazelight's best co-op game yet—constant genre shifts, emotional storytelling, and gameplay variety that never overstays its welcome. If you liked It Takes Two, this is essential.
