Kayak Fishing - Holland Haven 24/03/15

I've had to change where I launch and fish due to massive coastal works along Holland-on-Sea seafront. They have closed the prom & beach from Clacton Pier right down to Brighton Road. It's gonna be lovely when complete but my main launch site is halfway between. The works are not expected to finish til 2016 so I've moved further down and launching from Holland Haven slip. The car park their is £5.00 per day but if your a Tendring resident you can get a season pass for £20 so this year that's the plan. I tried it for the first time today. It's harder work getting to the sea as you have to drag the yak through soft sand but the bays they have created make for easy launching once their. They are creating the same bays all along the seafron so will be easy next year.
About 1 mile out their is a yellow marker bouy that sits in 30plus feet of water so that was my destination. The sea was calm although the wind was across the tide which makes things a little bumpy as you sit sideways into the waves. The bait was lugworm from Deans Tackle and they did well today as the worms were much bigger than they have been recently. I set both rods on a running ledger rig with some new hooks I'm trying called Sakuma Chinu's which worked well as it happened. The first 2 hours uptide saw around 6 whiting, all small unfortunately with a dead half hour on hightide. However the downtide saw sport increasing somewhat with codling after codling. Approx 10 altogether with 5 keepers. Some of the bites were real hard knocks, enough to pull the ram rod tube down on it's ball! No skate at all though which was a shame as a few have been showing on the pier as of late. The wind picked up a bit and as i was sitting side on the waves it got a bit lumpy & rocky so called it a day, still can't complain with a few cod fillets in the freezer. In the end it was an enjoyable days sport and it was good to get out as the wind has made it impossible lately.
