The Secret of the Cedars is one of the 42 Shrine Quests in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, exclusive to the base game (no DLC required). This quest reveals the hidden Tahno O'ah Shrine (Tahno O'ah's Blessing) in the Hateno region, northeast of Hateno Village. It's a straightforward exploration puzzle involving lining up three cedar trees on Madorna Mountain to uncover a bombable cave entrance. Completing the quest and shrine rewards you with a Spirit Orb and the Climbing Boots (part of the Climbing Gear set, which boosts climbing speed by 10% per piece and allows climbing in the rain when upgraded). The quest emphasizes perspective and navigation, similar to the visual alignment in other shrine quests.
This guide assumes you're playing the base game and have access to Hateno Village. Total time: 10-15 minutes, including travel.
Prerequisites and Location Tips
Starting Point: Hateno Village (eastern Hyrule, south of Lanayru Tower). Fast-travel to Hateno Tower or Dah Kaso Shrine for quick access.
Recommended Gear:
Cold resistance (Level 1) for Madorna Mountain's snowy summit—use the Snowquill Armor (from Rito Village) or eat a cold-resistant meal like Spicy Sautéed Peppers (3x Spicy Pepper).
Remote Bombs (essential for blowing up boulders).
Climbing Gear or food for stamina (e.g., Stamella Shrooms) if you're low on upgrades, as you'll need to climb the mountain.
When to Start: Daytime (9:00 AM - 6:00 PM in-game) to speak with Clavia, who only appears then. Rest at a campfire (Wood + Flint) to advance time if needed.
Quest Hint: No combat-heavy areas, but watch for wolves or Keese on the mountain paths.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Starting the Quest: Speak to Clavia in Hateno Village
Head to Hateno Village and go behind the Kochi Dye Shop (near the docks, east side of the village). Look for Clavia, a young girl standing there during the day.
Talk to her—she'll share a riddle from an old book: "You see those three trees up on top of that snowy mountain there? I found a small letter stuck between the pages... 'When the three summit trees become one, turn your back to them and head toward the sea. A trial encased in stone awaits you there.' I don’t know what that means! But maybe it means we have to head to Afromsia Coast, which is just east of those trees on the mountain!"
The quest "Secret of the Cedars" activates in your Adventure Log. The "three summit trees" refer to three tall cedar trees on the summit of Madorna Mountain (north of Hateno Village, visible from the research lab).
Reach Madorna Mountain and Line Up the Trees
From Hateno Village, head north past the Hateno Research Lab (where Purah is) and follow the path up Madorna Mountain. It's a steep, snowy climb—use your stamina wisely or glide from higher points if you've unlocked nearby shrines like Jitan Sa'mi Shrine (on Mt. Lanayru) and glide down.
At the summit, locate the three cedar trees lined up in a row (they're tall, evergreen trees standing out against the snow). Stand at the rightmost (easternmost) tree and position yourself so the three trees visually align into "one" (i.e., the middle and left trees overlap behind the right one when viewed from this angle). Face east toward the Afromsia Coast (the sea to the east).
Tip: Use the in-game map to spot the trees—they form a straight line pointing southeast. If you're having trouble aligning them, walk slightly east from the rightmost tree until the others overlap perfectly. This creates an imaginary line guiding you downhill.
Follow the Line to the Hidden Shrine Entrance
With your back to the aligned trees (facing east), head straight downhill toward the sea. Continue along this line, descending the mountain slope through the evergreen forest below.
You'll pass rocky cliffs and a small plateau—keep going east-northeast until you reach a spot just before the coast (coordinates approx. 2400, 0100 on the map, near the base of the mountain).
Look for a pile of boulders blocking a cave entrance in the cliffside (it's between the trees' line and the sea, hidden among the rocks). The entrance is subtle, so use your Shrine Sensor (unlocked via the "From the Ground Up" quest in Hateno) if available—it'll beep when close.
Enter the Tahno O'ah Shrine
Equip a Remote Bomb (R1 on Switch) and detonate it near the boulders to blow them up, revealing the glowing orange shrine entrance.
Enter the Tahno O'ah Shrine. This is a "Blessing" shrine—no puzzles inside! Simply walk to the altar, open the treasure chest for the Climbing Boots (base defense 2, climb speed up), and speak to Monk Tahno O'ah for your Spirit Orb.
Exit the shrine and return to Clavia in Hateno Village (optional) to complete the quest log entry.
