Have you ever heard the story of Widow Rocker, who was removed from the Island for “pauperism” in 1883? It’s time to take a new look at Eunice (Matthews) Rocker’s life and legacy. Examine some of the evidence yourself and join our panel of experts as they dig into the latest research that contradicts the traditional European-American narrative of this woman’s story, presenting her case in a whole new light. Panelists include:
-- Patricia Rocker, great-great-granddaughter of Eunice Rocker, Council Chairwoman of the Chappaquiddick Tribe of the Wampanoag Nation (Whale Clan), and Advisory Council Member of the Massachusetts Center for Native American Awareness
-- Skip Finley, broadcaster and author of Whaling Captains of Color
-- Andrew Patch, researcher and President of the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association
-- Elaine Weintraub, educator, historian, and co-founder of the Martha’s Vineyard African-American History Trail
-- A. Bowdoin Van Riper, Ph.D., author, historian, and Research Librarian at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum
Originally presented live at the MV Museum on July 12, 2022.
