U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) Commander Greg Bovino took the podium for the second time in two days on Sunday, taking questions on the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis man on Saturday morning.
Though Bovino provided no updates on the investigation, he began with a speech about making “good choices,” suggesting Alex Jeffrey Pretti – the intensive care nurse shot dead by a USBP agent on Saturday – should not have interfered with their failed mission to capture and deport an “illegal alien.”
“Agitators, rioters and anarchists prevented us from taking this individual into custody because of a very, very chaotic, chaotic scene,” Bovino said. “This individual should be in custody right now, not out on the streets preying on Americans. That that is the story that is most poignant here,” he added.
On Saturday, Bovino stated Pretti was armed and “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.” However, federal agents are facing mass scrutiny from politicians and the general public after videos showing several angles of the altercation show no clear evidence Pretti brandished a weapon before being killed.
“You’ve had 24 hours to try and armchair-quarterback things, that agent had a split second to make a decision,” Bovino told reporters when asked whether agents actually saw that Pretti was armed.
