David Pocock is one of Australia’s great rugby union players, but it’s what he fights for off the field that has attracted fans beyond the game. A chance window between matches allowed the champion to let two of his other passions come together - wildlife photography and environmental conservation - in the Takayna or Tarkine Rainforest, in Northwestern Tasmania.
The Tarkine is home to thousands of species including Tasmanian devils, wallabies, wombats, goshawks and the giant wedge-tailed eagle. It’s a rare forest region still relatively untouched by human civilisation for over 60 million years. But without national park or World Heritage status it’s under threat from logging, mining and industrial development.
For David, powerful imagery can help raise the awareness of what is a complex conservation challenge to save one of the world’s last truly wild ecosystems. “Who are we apart from where we live? Places like this, should belong to all Australians, and be preserved for all.”
