How To Cold Blue A Knife (Birchwood Casey) - Sharp Works

Cold bluing is a fast, simple, easy way to protect carbon steel from rust, similarly to a patina or hot bluing. This is why firearms have been blued and maintained for hundreds of years. Cold bluing is a chemical process that oxidizes the outermost layer of steel to prevent rust / corrosion from occurring deeper. Since it's only on the surface, this process is not the best for any metal that requires extensive handling. Knives are typically not recommended to have a cold blue finish because it wares off with everyday use. But knives kept in storage will greatly benefit from this process. This video demonstrates just how quick and easy cold bluing can be.
