After giving your best shot on that big interview, they said they’ll be contacting you again after they’ve done a couple more interviews with other candidates. Now, after days of waiting, you still haven’t heard back from them. How do you check for your application status without sounding desperate for the role?
The hardest part of the job application process, however, is waiting to hear the results of your interview.
Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to politely and effectively follow up on the status of your online interview.
Send a thank-you note.
The first step is to send a thank-you note to your interviewer. Make this a standard practice after getting into the interview.
The interviewer may not have gotten a good sense of your personality during the interview. Hence, a thank-you note is a great way to reiterate your interest in the position and show appreciation for the interviewer's time.
2. Check-in after the timeframe they mentioned
After you've sent your thank-you note, checking is appropriate if you haven't heard back from the interviewer within the timeframe they mentioned.
If the interviewer said they would get back to you within two weeks, wait at least that long before following up. Checking out any time sooner may make you appear impatient.
When you follow up, mention that you're just checking in to see if there has been any update on the hiring timeline. This shows that you're interested in the position but respectful of the interviewer's time.
3. Ask for feedback
If you're interested in the position and don't get the job, it's worth reaching out to the interviewer to ask for feedback.
This can be a difficult conversation, but it can help you understand what you need to improve for future interviews. It also shows that you're committed to self-improvement, a valuable quality in any employee.
To ask for feedback, send a short email or LinkedIn message to the interviewer, thanking them for their time and expressing your interest in receiving feedback.
Be prepared for criticism, but also be gracious and thankful for any advice you receive.
4. Don't give up
The waiting game is challenging but remains optimistic throughout the process.
It can be easy to give up hope after a few weeks of waiting but don't forget that the job market is constantly changing.
A position that isn't right for you today might be perfect in a few months, so don't get discouraged. Just make sure that you will never burn bridges. Even if you did not get picked, keep your door of communication open for them and remember to send them greeting cards on every special occasion. It is a proven approach that 95% of the clients come back after some time to consider hiring you or referring you at your least expected time.
