Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a country spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Siberia, which occupies three-quarters of Russia, is dominated by sprawling pine forests called taigas. Russia’s climate is extreme, with forbidding winters that have several times famously saved the country from foreign invaders. The sheer size of Russia and the remoteness of many of its areas from the sea result in the dominance of the humid continental climate throughout most of the country, except for the tundra and the extreme southwest. Mountain ranges in the south and east obstruct the flow of warm air masses from the Indian and Pacific oceans, while the European Plain spanning its west and north opens it to influence from the Alantic and Arctic oceans.
