ABOUT THE GAME

The Island of Doctor Morose is a hybrid survival horror and point n' click adventure game inspired by the midnight paintings of Theodor 'Seuss' Geisel. The entire game is hand drawn and hand animated, and is almost entirely written in rhyme (even the title screen options rhyme, did you catch that?). Rather than attempting to create a game about cheap jumpscares, the idea behind The Island of Doctor Morose is that the story and horrors of the world get deeper the more you learn about them. In essence, this is a game about exploring and uncovering hidden secrets. The deeper into the game you go, the more intense the imagery and gameplay will become. Players must use active WASD movement to get around, but must also examine their environment using the mouse to solve traditional style point n' click puzzles, all while avoiding the many horrors of Greatmaw Island. You play as a man named Howard, who has come to the island in search of his long lost friend, Phillip, who went to the island to work for the mysterious Doctor Morose nearly one year ago.

We were heavily inspired by Mr. Geisel's artworks which he intentionally did not show to children. His "Midnight Paintings" as he called them, as well as his Unorthodox Taxidermy collection. It is, however, important to note that while we were heavily inspired by his art, no art has been stolen or copied, and no pre-existing IPs are used in the game other than the public domain story The Island of Doctor Moreau by HG Wells, which narrative we consider our game to be an extremely loose adaptation of. Other influences include the works of HP Lovecraft (particularly 'At the Mountains of Madness', which is also in the Public Domain).

The game is being directed by Caden 'Octo' Rogers, who also serves as the game's narrative writer, art director, and lead animator. Additional art and character design is handled by concept artist Meikesandwich, and the programming team consists of Tyler Davis and Alyssa Thompson. None of us have ever crafted anything like this before.

The original score was composed by Miles Clark and will be available to stream on Spotify after the game's release.
