In this video I discuss the method we are going to attempt for growing sweet cherries in our fruit cage. We do not have that much space available so need a restricted form and a method for keeping the trees compact. The plan is to adapt the UFO (upright fruiting offshoots) approach and see if we can do this within the available space.
Here I talk a little about bare root trees, the characteristics of cherry trees, pruning and training in general and more specifically the UFO approach. Then I plant out the trees in the fruit cage ready for training, which will commence in the spring, after bud break.
Five old varieties were chosen: Early Rivers, Noir de Guben, Amber, Waterloo, and Roundel. Consideration was given to incompatibility groups and pollination groups. These five should be able to cross pollinate successfully, and although they are old varieties, they were all once well regarded for the quality of their fruit.
