Aliner pop-up campers are very light weight and difficult to set up or take down safely in strong winds. I wanted to share our latest positive experience with winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour, on a boondocking trip to the Mojave Preserve in California. Just some common-sense tips that we plan to use on our future trips, because we know there will be more windy nights!
Just a note that our Aliner is a 2018 LXE model (6 months old at this point) with the factory-installed wind-assist kit, so it may not reflect how your Aliner may behave in strong winds. Also we haven't been in a tornado yet... so this video doesn't cover tornado preparedness. We have the advantage of having 2 people to raise and lower the roof and lock down the wind-assist poles, so if you're a solo operator it may be even more difficult in high winds.
To go along with this video you may want to read some of the articles about Aliners in the wind and some of the damage that some owners have experienced, on the Aliner Owner's Club website and pop-up portal. There are other wind protection solutions available which we haven't tried so I can't testify as to their effectiveness. This is just our experience after being in 3 violent wind situations.
And one more footnote: We aren't really sure why we haven't had wind issues with our dormers (i.e. they haven't been pounding up and down in heavy winds). It seems like they are locked down somehow once we have them raised, but a call to Aliner might clarify that one. There is no special wind kit for the dormers to my knowledge.
