Although I have been a lifelong Atari user (bought my Atari 400 around 1980 or so), I was an admirer of the C64, particularly the SID chip. When it comes to video game music, Panther always comes to mind, excellent work by David Whittaker. Needless to say, I was disappointed with the Atari version, as I think POKEY can do a lot more than what is typically asked of it. While it can't do what SID can do, it does have some neat capabilities. Raster Music Tracker (RMT), which is a POKEY emulator and composition tool, allowed me to create my own version, which I think more closely matches the C64 version. I have played this on an Atari 800 emulator with no issue, and it can also be played directly on the actual Atari 400 / 800 / 8-bit computers. Fun to create this!!
