By the 12th century, the castle wasn’t just a fortress. It was a cultural sanctuary. Dante Alighieri himself praised the castle’s patrons—the Malaspinas—for their generosity and intellect. Troubadours and scholars came from afar, and this very hill echoed with the birth of Italian literature.”

But as centuries passed, war and politics chipped away at its glory. The castle changed hands repeatedly—from noble families to the Church, even being absorbed into the Duchy of Milan. Each era left its mark—sometimes in marble, sometimes in fire.

In the mid-20th century, the castle was lovingly restored by a private family and opened as a museum—inviting visitors to walk its uneven floors and feel the weight of ten centuries beneath their feet.
