On Monday 2nd September 2025 I arranged a visit to the new Transport for Wales Metro Depot with members of Cardiff East Rotary Club.
The new depot is situated alongside the A470 at Walnut Tree Junction, Taffs Well.
These facilities were built specially for the new Metro Class 398 units which are planned to go into passenger service in May 2026.
The new Metro trains will service the Rhondda, Merthyr & Aberdare valleys of South Wales.
These units can reach speeds of 60 mph.
The majority of the Metro Units had arrived & there were 30 units at the depot with another 6 units awaiting delivery. Each unit costing £5M
The units were all built in Valencia Spain but UK business supplying everything else including bogies.
These bogies have no motors or engines but run entirely on electric.
So not a drop of oil anywhere.
The brakes are all electro magnetic.
We had a wonderful morning at the depot & thank the staff for a very informative visit.
The depot was built at a cost of £100M & officially opened by HRH King Charles on 14th November 2025
