The Aeolian Building on West 42nd Street in New York city was built in 1912 by the Aeolian Company which manufactured pianos. It contained the 1100 seat Aeolian Hall where George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" was premiered on February 12, 1924. The concert hall is often incorrectly noted, both in books and on-line, as being on the third floor but was actually on the first and second floors. The building was sold in 1924 and for many years the ground floor and basement areas were occupied by a five and dime store. From 1961 to 1994 the building housed the Graduate Center of the City University of New York but now is the location of the State University of New York's College of Optometry.
