Tibetan kowtow is an important practice in Tibetan Buddhism and a highly symbolic religious behavior in Tibetan culture.
The unity of body, speech and mind: The action of kowtow (putting hands together and raising them above the head, touching the forehead, touching the mouth, touching the chest, and finally stretching the whole body on the ground) symbolizes the complete dedication of body, speech and mind to the Dharma, and expresses piety to the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha through physical practice.
Eliminating karma and accumulating merits. Tibetan Buddhism believes that kowtow can purify the accumulated bad karma in the past, and accumulate blessings through continuous practice to create conditions for liberation from reincarnation.
When kowtow, believers often vow to act for the liberation of all sentient beings, reflecting the bodhicitta spirit of Mahayana Buddhism's "self-benefit and altruism".
Pilgrimage: Many Tibetans will complete long-distance pilgrimages by kowtow. This process is not only a physical exercise, but also regarded as a journey of spiritual purification. Each step of prostration represents the adherence to faith
-During the pilgrimage, believers kowtow for a long time, through the contact between the body and the land, to strengthen their connection with the sacred space (such as sacred mountains, holy lakes, temples), reflecting the awe of nature and gods.
