New York's Flatiron Building is known as New York's first skyscraper, but that is not entirely true. The title ‘New York’s first skyscraper’ applies to the 11-story tower building, built in 1989. The Flatiron Building was built in 1902, 13 years after the Tower Building was completed. The Tar Building was demolished in 1913 and no longer exists. Therefore, New York's oldest existing skyscraper is actually the Flatiron Building.

The history of the Flatiron Building begins with architect Daniel Burnham, who was commissioned to design and construct it. Burnham was one of America's most famous architects throughout his life. The bold design of the New York Flatiron received much ridicule in the newspapers. The New York Tribune described his work as ‘a mere piece of cake’ and ‘New York’s number one lifeless troublemaker.’

Fortunately, people immediately embraced the Fuller Building (which was actually the intended name) and renamed it the Flatiron Building without any further fuss. Because of the new steel structure, construction took only one year. This certainly contributed to the building's reputation.

Flatiron has 22 floors and was designed from the beginning as an office floor. The publishing house St Martin's Press moved in in 1959, gradually leasing additional offices, and from 2004 became the building's sole tenant. Even after recent extensive renovations, Flatiron will continue to be used as an office building.

In 1989, New York's Flatiron was designated a National Historic Landmark, further increasing its popularity. The building is currently worth $190 million, so when taking pictures, keep in mind that you have a very expensive piece of iron in front of your lens.
