CaLiGINE — Classical Music Covered by an Italian Progressive Rock Band | Vintage 1970s Prog Rock

Anthologia di rock classico is a fascinating window into the world of CaLiGINE, an Italian progressive rock band active between 1972 and 1983, and one of several fantastic progressive rock bands to come out of Italy during the 1970s. However, they never achieved the fame of many of their contemporaries, such as PFM, Goblin, Libra, etc.

Collected here are the band’s inspired reinterpretations of classical works by Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Grieg, Bizet, Mussorgsky, Puccini, and others — recorded across the band's original studio albums, along with several powerful live performances from their 10th anniversary European tour in 1992.

While CaLiGINE’s original albums also explored ambitious original compositions, this collection focuses entirely on their classical adaptations — where familiar themes are reshaped through the band’s unmistakable blend of organ-driven prog, jazz phrasing, and rock energy. The core lineup of organ, guitar, bass, and drums is occasionally expanded with piano, Moog, and violin, giving these pieces both weight and color without ever losing their sense of adventure.

CaLiGINE never broke through internationally, but in Italy—especially in Venice—they earned a loyal and devoted following. Today, their albums are notoriously difficult to track down. This anthology CD collection, released only in Japan in the mid-1990s, following the band’s 1992 reunion tour, remains one of the few accessible documents of their work, and a rare treat for collectors and prog enthusiasts alike.

At the heart of the band were four musicians with strikingly different backgrounds:

Michele Marino, a Venice native, came from a formal classical education, studying music in school and at university before discovering jazz through the influence of his bandmates — falling particularly in love with artists Dave Brubeck and Jimmy Smith.

Guitarist Alistair Drake, originally from Farnham, England, began his musical journey in the British blues scene of the 1960s before moving to Italy in the early ’70s. Deeply influenced by American blues and jazz guitar — citing Elmore James, Hubert Sumlin, Freddie King, Albert King, Django Reinhardt, Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, and Joe Pass as influences — Drake brought warmth, swing, soul, and a distinctly international flavor to CaLiGINE’s sound.

Dario Vendelini (bass, additional keyboards, and violin) and Lucio Potenza (drums) were childhood friends from a small town outside Venice, and bonded early on over a mutual love for British rock and American Jazz. Vendelini also grew up with an appreciation for classical music, instilled in him by his violin-playing father. Potenza fell in love with jazz music, and especially its drummers at an early age — citing Joe Morello and Art Blakey as influences. As lifelong friends and a team, the two locked in as a rhythm section long before CaLiGINE ever existed.

The four musicians crossed paths in Rome’s vibrant music scene in late 1971, forming CaLiGINE the following year. Their debut album, Visioni nella CaLiGINE, was recorded and released in 1972, kicking off a creatively rich run during what many still consider progressive rock’s golden age.
