The city of Itu was a point of support and connection for expeditions, the first inhabitants of it were the Portuguese settlers, who dedicated themselves to the construction of a chapel to Nossa Senhora da Candelária.
This chapel is the foundation of the city in 1610.
The city receives tourists due to its attractions considered as "exaggerations", such as payphone, traffic lights, guitar, mannequin, among others.
Until 1750, the village of Itu was very small, with only one street. Slaves and plantation owners built two convents and a few churches in the region.
The period between 1836 and 1854 marks the great growth of Itu. The exportation of Brazilian sugar to Europe guaranteed it the title of the richest village in the entire province. In this period, in February 1842, the village was raised to the status of city.
The first republican movements were made in this region, which caused the downfall of the royal family years later.
Coffee production replaced sugarcane and was the basis of the local economy until 1935. This advent resulted in the arrival of thousands of Italian immigrants to work in place of slaves on farms.
In 1950, industries began to settle in the municipality, generating a migration from rural to urban areas in search of work.
