1. Overview of DBT-JRF
Conducted by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
Offers fellowships for Ph.D. programs in biotechnology and allied life sciences fields.
Exam managed by the Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL).
Selected candidates receive research fellowships to work in any university/institute in India.
2. Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification:
M.Sc./M.Tech./M.V.Sc. in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or related fields.
Candidates in the final year of M.Sc./M.Tech. can also apply.
Age Limit:
Category I: Max 28 years (relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PwD/female & 3 years for OBC).
Category II: No age limit.
3. Exam Structure
The exam is called "Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET)", conducted once a year.

Exam Pattern:
Mode: Online (Computer-Based Test)
Duration: 3 hours
Total Marks: 300
Sections:
Part A (General Science & Aptitude) – 50 questions (150 marks)
Part B (Biotechnology & Life Sciences) – 50 questions (150 marks)
Marking Scheme:
+3 for correct answer, -1 for incorrect in both sections.
4. Fellowship Categories
Category I:
Eligible for Ph.D. fellowship in DBT-funded institutes & universities.
Fellowship is equivalent to CSIR-NET JRF (~ ₹37,000/month + HRA).
Category II:
Eligible for DBT-supported project-based positions, but not JRF funding.
5. Fellowship Benefits
Category I Awardees:
₹37,000 per month (JRF) for the first 2 years.
₹42,000 per month (SRF) for the next 3 years.
HRA (as per institute norms).
Research Opportunities:
Ph.D. in DBT-recognized universities (IISc, IITs, AIIMS, NII, etc.).
Work in cutting-edge areas like genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology, and more.
6. Application Process
Notification Release: Usually in February/March.
