Something Weird is happening with Blue Origin Shepard Launch...
Confusing developments are unfolding in the space industry!
Blue Origin has just completed a special New Shepard flight, but it's raising questions—particularly about what it really means to be called an “astronaut.”
At the same time, SpaceX is dealing with unexpected landing issues near the Bahamas.
And over in Europe, rising space company RFA has announced a change in leadership with a new CEO stepping in.
Let’s break it all down in today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
Something Weird is happening with Blue Origin Shepard Launch...
After resuming operations in December 2023 following a failure in September 2022, Blue Origin has ramped up its New Shepard space tourism program, particularly in terms of flying human crews. Most recently, the company launched NS-31, its 31st overall flight, which marked a historic moment for Blue Origin. For the first time, the entire crew consisted of women, making this mission especially noteworthy.
The flight took off from Blue Origin’s standard launch site in West Texas at 8:30 AM CST (9:30 AM EST). As with previous flights, the rocket followed a typical suborbital trajectory, carrying the capsule to the edge of space, crossing the Kármán line. There, the crew experienced several minutes of weightlessness. After reaching its peak altitude, the rocket booster executed a successful vertical landing, and the capsule safely descended via parachutes, landing smoothly in the desert.

The six women who participated in this mission deserve immense credit for their bravery and determination. Their willingness to take part in such a journey is inspiring, and their flight is sure to motivate others to pursue careers in space, science, and exploration.
However, this mission has also reignited a long-standing debate surrounding New Shepard: Should these passengers be considered “astronauts”? While Blue Origin refers to all its crewed passengers as astronauts, this label has generated increasing controversy over the years.
Most notably, Sean Duffy, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, responded directly to Blue Origin’s social media posts with a statement that drew a clear line. Referring to FAA guidelines under the now-retired Commercial Space Astronaut Wings Program, he said:
“The U.S. commercial space industry is an inspiring project which showcases American ingenuity and exceptionalism.
